Norham is a
small border
town, located on
the River Tweed
and was once
home to the
Bishop of Durham
who built and
lived in Norham
Castle from 1120
and controlled
much of the area
in medieval
times. The
castle is
steeped in
history and has
been besieged or
captured by the
Scots and
English on
numerous
occasions. As a
result of these
conflicts, the
castle went
through a large
number of
repairs during
it's life time
and was rebuilt
on a number of
occasions. The
ruins of the
castle stand in
a fairly
complete state
today and are
popular with
visitors. There
is also a
Railway Museum
housed in the
old railway
station. |
