the centre of 'taking the cure'. Today a museum,
it recalls the elegance of a bygone era and
tells the story of Harrogate's fame as England's
only truly European spa. Some of the famous Spa

Once a stronghold of Medieval Kings, the Castle,
now in ruins, still towers above the River Nidd.
The Castle's oldest surviving building houses
the Courthouse Museum with many displays of
town's history. 80-foot long tunnel, the
sallyport, and the dungeon are other points to
visit.

A fascinating collection of exhibits displayed
in the original Victorian workhouse,
illustrating the life and history of Dalesfolk.
Displays include Cobbler's Shop, General Store,
Victorian Parlour and others on agriculture,
transport and industries.

One of Harrogate's earliest spa buildings built
as a promenade room in 1804, now converted to an
art gallery. Exhibitions feature the Harrogate
permanent collections plus a programme of
temporary exhibitions.

Courthouse
The former Ripon Liberty Courthouse
stands on the site of its mediaeval predecessor
and remains little altered since it opened in
1830. Stand in the dock where people were
sentenced to be transported to Australia. Watch
the audio-visual presentation of cases heard in
1830. The Courthouse featured as Ashfordly
Magistrates Court in the popular television
series 'Heartbeat'. Admission charge.
Prison & Police Museum, St Marygate, Ripon
The buildings served Ripon as the House Of
Correction for vagrants (1686-1816), the Liberty
Prison (1816-1878) and as the Police Station
(1887-1956). The history of policing is traced
through the displays and artefacts from the
Trust's extensive collection of police
memorabilia. Admission charge.
Workhouse Museum,
Allhallowgate, Ripon
The buildings are of the 1854 Ripon Union
Workhouse. In 1996 Museum was opened in the cell
block which had housed male vagrants, care has
been taken to recreate its grim atmosphere, from
sitting down to a bowl of gruel in the morning
to being locked into a cell at nightfall.

The gallery is a Yorkshire based art gallery,
located in Ripon, specialising in high quality
Fine Art from the 18th, 19th and 20th Centuries.
Artworks include lithographs, engravings,
