This moorland village
which looks out onto Ampleforth Valley has
ancient origins and archaeologists have
uncovered earthworks showing there were
settlements here early in the Bronze Age. The
beautiful parish church of St Oswald - from
which the village derives its name - was
dedicated to the Anglo Saxon king of
Northumbria, a Christian convert who died in
642 while fighting pagan King Penda of Mercia. |
