The Holocaust Centre is
a memorial, museum and education centre. Its
unique approach provides a moving memorial to
those lost in the Holocaust, with a strong
educational remit.
The exhibition combines
original artefacts and an imaginative portrayal
of the historical events leading up to the
Holocaust. The focus of the exhibition is on the
human story, encouraging visitors to relate to
the ‘ordinary’ lives of those devastated by the
Holocaust.

The Museum houses a large collection of dolls
from the 18th century to the present day in a
late 17th century Dower house of considerable
interest. The collection includes: toys, prams,
dolls' houses, books, games, railway models,
christening robes, children's and adults'
costumes and various domestic artefacts. Also on
display are Vina Cooke's handmade portrait dolls
from Robin Hood to Royalty (past and present),
and stars of stage and screen. There are
handmade dolls, crafts and gifts for sale and a
Dolls' Hospital. Also tearoom.

The museum is housed within the Grade I listed
Georgian Town Hall, completed in 1776. The
collections, dating from the 17th century,
include Civic plate, Civic Insignia and Fine
Art, with works by Sir William Nicholson and Sir
Stanley Spencer, and notable local artists. The
Ballroom and working Mayor's Parlour are open to
visitors. Temporary exhibitions in the Spotlight
Gallery are on the second floor. Guided tours
and school events require booking. Disabled
toilet. Free admission. Wheelchair access. Open:
Mon to Fri 11am - 4pm. Sat 12noon - 4pm. Closed

Mansfield Museum and Art Gallery depicts the
surprisingly diverse and fascinating history of
Mansfield and the District. The permanent
displays tell the story of Mansfield and
illustrate the natural, industrial and social
history of the region. Examples of fine and
decorative arts of local significance are also
on show. An extensive and varied programme of
temporary exhibitions means that there is always
something new to see. Displays change every few
months and can include work by local amateur
artists and groups as well as by professionals
who tour their work nationally.

19th-century institution for paupers. The
Workhouse survives as the least altered
example of its kind in existence today.
Visitors can explore the segregated rooms and
stairways as well as the master’s quarters to
discover the thought-provoking story of the
‘welfare’ system, created by the New Poor Law
of 1834. |
The audio guide, based on archive records,
brings the 19th-century inhabitants back to life
in the empty rooms. Interactive displays address
the issue of poverty through the years and
across the country, while children’s games
illuminate the life of people who once inhabited
the Workhouse.

Although Newstead Abbey is better known for
being the family home of Lord Byron, the site
initially housed a group of Augustinian canons
founded circa 1170. The lake at the front of the
abbey has two mock forts, these were built by
Byron's great uncle, known as Devil Byron, and
were used along with a 20-gun warship on the
lake, to re-enact sea battles. Inside the house
are various personal possessions of the poet.

At Ruddington Framework Knitters' Museum you
will gain a fascinating insight into the life
and labour of a 19th century framework knitting
community. Watch the knitting demonstrations and
discover the process of making delicate lace
shawls as well as sturdy socks. See for yourself
the Victorian cottages and traditional
workshops. Enjoy the sight, sound and smell of
working machinery. Find out all about griswolds,
trick bars, jacks, sinkers and slurcocks.
Ruddington Framework Knitters' Museum has been
preserved as the best surviving example of
Victorian knitting workshops and cottages.
Grouped around a garden courtyard, the wash
house, pump, privies and pigsty complete the
picture. You will find staff always on hand to
answer questions and help make your visit as
enjoyable as possible.
