Fascinating 1920's
tradesman’s home.
This modest semi-detached Edwardian house was
the family home of well-to-do grocers William
and Florence Straw from 1923.
It is remarkable because the Straws’ two sons
preserved it almost unaltered till it came to
the National Trust in 1990.
The interior with its 1920s wallpaper, heavy
Victorian furniture and household objects
provides a rare glimpse into interwar
middle-class life. |

This is the church where
legend says that Robin Hood married Maid
Marian.
Situated at the heart of Sherwood Forest, less
than a mile from the Major Oak -- Robin's
reputed hiding place -- it is easy to see how
the tale took root in popular imagination.

Southwell Minster: The
"Village Cathedral"

Southwell Minster -

Southwell Minster became the cathedral of
Nottinghamshire in 1884, but this church of
the Blessed Virgin Mary has been a minster (or
missionary church) covering most of
Nottinghamshire since Saxon times.
Sometimes called the "village cathedral," it
boasts Roman remains, a Saxon carving, solid
Norman architecture and the world famous
chapter house filled with unique carvings.
No wonder Cardinal Wolsey liked the place so
much that he stayed in the Archbishop's Palace
for three months in the summer of 1530.

Newstead Abbey -

Set back at the end of a sweeping mile-long
drive that opens out into 320 acres of
parkland, the exterior of Newstead Abbey
doesn't look particularly inviting.
But inside one can glimpse a fascinating
insight into the life of George Gordon Byron,
the sixth Lord -- better known as Byron the
romantic poet, described by his mistress Lady
Caroline Lamb as "mad, bad and dangerous to
know".
