it is the largest woodland open to the public in
the East Midlands. A working forest - Sherwood
Pines is an important timber producing woodland
making a vital contribution to everyday demands
for wood products. Pines, heath and oak trees
are havens for wildlife including birds such as
the nightjar and of course the fallow deer.
A superb visitor centre
nestles amongst the pines to with a cafe
providing refreshments and a cycle hire shop.
There are waymarked trails, which invites the
visitor to explore the forest. One of the trails
is an easy access trail for disabled visitors.
Cycle routes are also marked giving the cyclist
a traffic free environment to enable them to
experience the beauty of the forest. The routes
offer choices to suit everyone from families to
off-road cyclists. Cycle hire is available.

The Visitor Centre, opened in October 1994, is

Three Centres Trail, plus the many other

Brierley Forest Park Visitor Centre was opened
in December 1999 and is located at the end of
Skegby Road in Huthwaite. The Park, 100 hectares
(250 acres), provides many trails, nature
conservation areas, recreation facilities (such
as a golf club and a football pitch), art and
sculptures, and areas of local historical
interest.

The Visitor Centre first opened in 1993 and is
located at an ideal access point to the Pleasley
Trails network and other walks, offering a wide

Centre, and the extensive surrounding grassland
areas are ideal for picnics and recreation.
Refreshments and snacks are always available
whilst the Centre is open. Cycle Hire facilities
are available offering you the perfect
opportunity to safely cycle along the trails.
The Teversal Trails have transformed the
trackbeds of former colliery railways to create
a network of enchanting trails. The trails
provide tranquil walks, horse or bike riding,
through beautiful countryside. They are abundant
with fascinating wildlife.

Thieves Wood is managed by the Forestry
Commission and is part of the Royal Forest of
Sherwood. It was once part of the Royal Wood of
Lyndhurst owned by the King. Thieves' Wood
consists of 200 hectares of mainly pine forest.
There is ample free parking and a choice of two
way-marked trails (blue and white). In addition
to walking, the site is also suitable for
cycling and horse riding. Thieves' Wood Centre
is situated at the far side of the woods where
you are able to relax and enjoy the natural
beauty of the forest. There are conveniently
located picnic areas allowing the perfect
opportunity to enjoy the abundant and
fascinating wildlife.

20-acre woodland, a haven for wildlife with a
fascinating industrial heritage. Location of the
UK's first onshore oilfield, producing 280,000
tons of oil between 1939 and 1966. Some of the
"nodding donkeys" have been restored and are
sited around the wood adjacent to the nature
trail. Wood is dominated by oak, ash and hazel
and provides ideal habit for birds such as
blackcap, great spotted woodpecker and jay. Wild
flowers in the wood include primrose, violet,
bluebell, wood anemone and wood sorrel.

cappuchins, ruffed lemurs and a troop of

newest and largest nature reserves, with areas
of open water, reed bed and important grassland.
