This small market town
shows how draining the fens with steam-power
in the 19th
century changed the lives of local people.
A pump
was brought in to remove the water from Whittlesey
Mere, a vast lake.
Although it created land it
also drove away wildlife and halted one of
Cambridgeshire’s great sports – winter
ice-skating!
Nearby Holme Fen is still the lowest
point in Britain. |
