For almost 1,000 years the site of Suffolk's
Cathedral has been one of worship and
pilgrimage. A Norman abbey was built to house
the remains of the martyred monarch Edmund, King
of the East Angles. In the twelfth century,
Abbot Anselm built an additional church for
pilgrims to the Abbey, dedicated it to St.
James. The nave of today's church is the
successor of that church. Little remains of the
Benedictine Abbey, as the Church continued to
grow over the centuries, until 1914 when St.
James' became the Cathedral church of the
Diocese of Saint Edmundsbury and Ipswich. Today
the Cathedral is open to visitors all year round
from 7.30am to 6.00pm.
